Planes Bring More Bodies Of MH17 Victims To The Netherlands

KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — Two military aircraft carrying remains of victims from the Malaysian plane disaster departed for the Netherlands Thursday, while Australian and Dutch diplomats joined to promote a plan for a U.N. team to secure the crash scene which has been controlled by pro-Russian rebels.

All 298 people aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 — most of them Dutch citizens — were killed when the plane was shot down on July 17. U.S. officials say the Boeing 777 was probably shot down by a missile, most likely by accident. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who says he fears …read more

Wimbledon Discovered Its Annual Yearbook Was Full Of Plagiarism, Kept Selling It Anyway: Slate

The gift shop at Wimbledon, which rests above the subterranean Wimbledon museum, sells towels, polo shirts, and even strawberry-shaped earrings. The shop also sells a yearbook, known as the Official Wimbledon Annual. The 2013 annual, a compendium of photos and writings from that year’s tournament, featured a cover shot of Andy Murray kissing the championship trophy. The tournament’s online shop touted the book thusly: “Retold by award-winning writer Neil Harman, the official annual review comprises 160 pages packed full of memories, day-by-day highlights, player interviews, the complete draws and features on the stories that made the fortnight so memorable.”

Try This 18-Minute Ritual For Incredible Focus

We think of rituals as something for religious observances and major life occurrences–something you do in church or on the day you get married. But research shows that not allrituals have to be big, formal and public to be effective.

An action as small, private and seemingly silly as drawing negative feelings on a piece of paper, sprinkling it with salt, and tearing it to pieces significantly reduced feelings of anger and upset in one study, for instance.

Keeping a salt shaker and art materials at your desk may be a bit much to ask the …read more

Cleveland Browns Expect Johnny Manziel To Be Good, On And Off The Field

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Johnny will be good.

That’s what the Browns expect from Johnny Manziel now that training camp is about to start. Cleveland coach Mike Pettine said he’s not worried about the popular rookie’s wild off-field behavior carrying into the season, and he’s determined not to let any outside influences affect his decision in picking either Manziel or veteran Brian Hoyer to be his starting quarterback.

Pettine, who will open his first training camp on Saturday, discussed Manziel, Pro Bowl wide receiver Josh Gordon’s clouded situation and several other topics during an interview with The Associated …read more

Kurdish Politician Fouad Massoum Named President Of Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) — Kurdish politician Fouad Massoum has been named the new president of Iraq following a parliamentary vote.

Massoum, 76, is one of the founders of current President Jalal Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party. He is considered a soft-spoken moderate, known for keeping good relations with Sunni and Shiite Arab politicians. The vote for president — a largely ceremonial post — was delayed for a day when the Kurdish bloc requested more time to select a candidate. They named Massoum as their pick late Wednesday.

Under an unofficial agreement dating back to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, …read more

MH17: Cold War Replay?

The most bizarre conspiracy theory surrounding the recent downing of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine comes from a leading pro-Russian separatist, Igor Girkin.

Relying on second-hand information, Girkin asserted that many of the passengers from the crash had already been dead before the plane had even taken off. His underlings had reported to him that the bodies were badly decomposed and drained of blood. This, of course, was news to all the families of the victims who’d seen off their loved ones at the airport in Amsterdam.

The separatists have denied responsibility for shooting down …read more

The Night Owl's Guide To The Perfect Morning

As a culture, we heap a lot of praise on so-called morning people, but there’s nothing wrong with being a night owl. Many of history’s most creative people did their best work at night, finding that the quiet and solitude — and in some cases, their inability to sleep — brought out their best ideas.

If you’re someone who comes alive in the small hours, after everyone else has gone to bed, the question remains: how do you make sure all those late-night creative fireworks don’t set you up for a groggy, cranky, unproductive …read more

Abandoned Mall Becomes Home To Thousands Of Koi In Thailand (PHOTOS)

It wouldn’t take very long for nature to reclaim much of the world that humanity’s paved over, but a mall in Thailand has far exceeded anyone’s expectations.

Bangkok’s New World Mall was closed in 1997 and the structure’s roof collapsed two years later, allowing more than a decade of rainwater to slowly fill the building. To deal with a growing mosquito problem, locals introduced freshwater tilapia and koi that have now taken over the urban lake, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Photographer Jesse Rockwell said he’s lived in Thailand …read more

How Putin Is Shaping The Next U.S. Free Trade Deal

WASHINGTON — Three dozen environmental groups sent a letter to the Obama administration on Thursday asking it to reject part of a proposed trade deal with the European Union that would give a major boost to fracking in the U.S.

Multiple sets of documents leaked recently show the EU requesting shipments of U.S. oil and natural gas in negotiations for the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, or TTIP. It’s an unusual ask in a trade deal, since countries typically demand restrictions on foreign imports in trade talks, while requesting special treatment of their …read more
